This half-day tour of the Kathmandu Valley is designed to give you a deeper understanding of the sacred traditions and culture of Nepal. The Kathmandu Valley has been the cultural and spiritual center of Nepal since ancient times and is home to seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Visit the heart of ‘Old’ Kathmandu, where the traditional ways of life still fill its narrow streets and ancient buildings. The ancient shopping bazaars of Asana Tole and Indra Chowk are teaming with sights, sounds and smells that will overload your senses.
The ancient palaces and temples of Kathmandu Durbar Square bring history alive. Taleju Temple, built by King Mahendra Malla in1549 A.D, is the tallest of all such structures. The 16th century Jagannath Temple, is known for its intriguing erotic figures, carved in the wooden struts and eaves. One of the largest stone idols in Kathmandu is in the Durbar Square. This statue of Kal Bhairav, represents the terrifying aspects of Shiva. The Kasthamandap temple was built from the timber of a single tree. The towering Nautale Durbar (nine story palace), with its intricately carved wooden doorways, roof struts, and massive lattice windows full of mythical figures, overlooks the city and vast Basantapur Square. The palaces of the medieval kings who ruled over the ancient Kathmandu Kingdom represent the finest of Hindu and Buddhist architecture.
Swayambhunath, also known as the Monkey temple, is one of the most important Buddhist pilgrimage destinations in Nepal. This splendid Buddhist monastery, high on a hill overlooking the city, dates back more than 2,000 years. The main structure of the round stupa is composed of brick and clay. The main stupa supports a tall conical spire, topped by a copper pinnacle. At the base of the spire on all four sides, are the painted “All Seeing Eyes” of Lord Buddha. Swayambhunath literally means, “The Self-Created or Existent”. This mosaic of stupas and pagoda temples were constructed by a succession of kings and noblemen over many years.

My wife and I trekked the Manaslu Circuit with Ngima's Annapurna Foothills in late 2014. The trip, from start to finish, was nothing short of spectacular. Ngima and Tenzin were the warmest, most gracious hosts, and showed single-minded devotion to ensuring the trip's success, safety, and joyfulness.Merrick Kingston
