The Langtang Valley is known as the valley of glaciers. It is a spectacular region with breathtaking Himalayan scenery: glaciers decend from massive snow capped peaks, rushing mountain streams carve their way through pine forests, and the sacred alpine lakes of Gosainkunda offer serenity to pilgrims and trekkers alike.
The Langtang Peaks are the quickest and least expensive to climb. The trail head to the approach trek is just a one-day's drive from Kathmandu yet there is enough time to acclimatize for the ascent, making these peaks very safe, even for novice climbers. These peaks are also the least expensive and have relatively little risk involved, while still giving a classic alpine peak experience. In spite of the beauty and accessability, the Langtang peaks attract fewer trekkers than the Everest and Annapurna peaks, which only adds to the allure.
The wild and rugged Langtang Valley closely resembles the neighboring highlands of Tibet. The character of the villages reflect the Tibetan heritage of an isolated community that has changed little over the past few centuries. Now identified as the 'Tamang' tribe, their language, dress, houses and ancient Buddhist beliefs bear strong resemblance to their Tibetan ancestors.
The Langtang Valley runs east-west in central Nepal between the northern Himalayan range and lesser peaks in the south. The high northern mountains are dominated by Langtang Lirung, 7245m. In the south Chimse Danda (Hill), Ganja La pass, 5122m, Jugal Himal and Dorje Lakpa, 6989m.
The Langtang Valley became the first National Park of Nepal in 1971. Its rhododendron, bamboo and oak forests provide sanctuary for many animals and birds: grey langur monkeys, musk deer, red panda, wild boar, Himalayan black bear, ghoral, tahr, snow leopard and the Impeyan pheasant, the national bird of Nepal.
