Kali Gandaki Trekking- 14 Days

Annapurna Kali Gandaki Trekking

The Kali Gandaki follows the river bed northward to emerge in dry, desert- like Mustang, on the north side of the main Himalayan range. It is essentially the final third of the Annapurna Circuit, done in reverse. The Kali Gandaki is the deepest gorge in the world. It carries water from the Tibetan Plateau southward on its journey toward the Ganges.

This rocky trail between the soaring peaks of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri is suitable for people of all ages who are keen to experience the high Himalayas within a reasonably short time and without ascending to extreme altitude. The Kali Gandaki Trek attracts adventure and nature lovers as well as pilgrims seeking Muktinath, which means the place of salvation. The Muktinath Temple is surrounded by 108 natural stone taps and mysterious natural gas fires.

The Kali Gandaki Trek offers insight into the life of ethnic hill tribes. The most prominent ethnic groups of this region are Gurung, Thakali and Manangba. There are ancient monasteries, caves and amazing scenery to explore. If you look closely you will surely see fossilized ammonites along the upper reaches of the Kali Gandaki River valley. Wildlife includes pika, blue sheep and Himalayan Thar. The Kali Gandaki Trek offers an amazing range of elevation which correlates with a remarkable diversity of flora. The trek begins in sub-tropical lowland forests of oak, bamboo and rhododendron and fertile rice terraces and climbs up to high alpine meadows and the barren windswept desert of the Tibetan Plateau.

The  Kali Gandaki Trek is possible at any time of the year. Unlike other parts of Nepal, this area is not affected by the monsoon since the Upper Mustang falls in the rain shadow area. Like most trekking routes in the Annapurna region, this trail is well facilitated by teahouses.

Travel options: There are several options for the Kali Gandaki Trek depending on your preferences. From Kathmandu it is possible to fly or go by road to Pokhara. From Pokhara, it is possible to fly to Jomsom, or to go by road to a trailhead at Nayapul, and trek to Jomsom. The same options apply to the return trip.  Just inform us about your preferences and we will supply the itinerary accordingly.

The Best Season for the Kali Gandaki Trek

The main trekking season is from February to late April and September to late November, however, this trek falls in the rain shadow of the Annapurna range, and can be done any time of year!  Some prefer the seasons with fewer trekkers!

Kali Gandaki Trek is a Tea House/Lodge Trek

Accommodation is included in the cost of your package. Annapurna Foothills Treks takes great care to arrange the most comfortable accommodation possible throughout your stay.

In Kathmandu, our clients enjoy four nights in Hotel Holy Himalaya before and after heading into the remote regions.

During the trek, the nights will be spent in clean and comfortable tea houses with plenty of character and good food. The simple rooms usually have two narrow beds. The family run lodges are a great place to get to know the Nepalese people. In Nepalese culture, a guest is equal to god, and surely this has become even more of a reality since the tourism industry has improved their meager opportunities to earn. You will be made very welcome!

Meals on the Kali Gandaki Trek

Three meals a day are included during your trek. The menu will be fairly simple, but freshly cooked and hygienic. You can enjoy typical Nepali food as well as all types of international cuisine. Dinners and breakfasts will be provided in the teahouse/lodge where you spend the night. Lunches will be eaten in a teashop on the way to the destination of the day.

Drinking Water

While trekking, it is important to keep hydrated; you should drink at least 3 liters of water each day. In the Annapurna Region there are Euro-guard filters, so all you need is your own water bottle and you can refill it easily.  We suggest you bring a supply of water purification tablets in case Euro-guard water is not available.  We request that you avoid using bottled mineral water, as the bottles are not easily disposed of.

Spending Money per Day

Although it depends on your spending habits, you should allocate US$ 10 - 15 per meal in Kathmandu. On the trek, your meals are included, but you may wish to purchase extras which are not included in your package, such as chocolate bars, Coca Cola or a beer. US$10 - 15 a day should be enough, but keep in mind the cost of all items increases proportionately with the distance from the trail head.

Travel Insurance

Annapurna Foothills Treks strongly recommends you to have sufficient insurance coverage to go into this remote area. You need specialized travel insurance that covers emergency evacuation, injury, lost baggage, liability and medical treatment. Make sure the insurance covers all the activities that you will be undertaking during your stay in Nepal. Annapurna Foothills Treks and Expeditions Pvt. Ltd. can organize the appropriate medical response based on your policy.
