Here are a few factors to consider:
Personal Factors:
Your age and your health condition. These two factors may not always be related. For people with chronic health issues like arthritis or asthma, it would be a good idea to have a physical check up at home to see if you need to take any extra precautions. There are almost no medical facilities in remote regions, so it is wise to be prepared.
Your level of physical fitness. You will enjoy the trek more if you find the trek that matches your ambition and fitness level. We have treks that suit all abilities and experience levels, from very short and gentle treks to extremely sustained trekking in remote regions.
Your comfort level. If you like roughing it, then a camping trek into a newly opened area will probably be more satisfying. More popular routes have lodges, or tea-houses, which are cozy, if basic, homey places to mingle with the locals and other trekkers.
Trek Factors:
Length and grade of trek. Make sure you have the stamina to face the challenge of the trek you are considering. The longer the trek, and the more difficult the grade, the more you will need to be sure to be phsyically fit and mentally prepared.
The altitude range of the trek. If it is your first time going over 3500 meters, we recommend that you consult with your physician at home. Our treks are planned to allow gradual acclimatization and follow the '400-meters a day' rule. However, altitude sickness does not always follow the rules, and can affect any member of the group including the youngest and fittest. It is a good idea to be prepared. Please read "Altitude Advice".
The season of the trek. If it is winter season, treks with high passes may be extra challenging or impossible. Given climate change that is affecting Nepal along with the rest of the world, you should be prepared for unexpected weather which will make the trek more difficult than you expected.
Remoteness of Trek. Treks into newly opened or restricted areas of Nepal offer amazing cultural and natural beauty in areas that remain untouched by modernization. These remote areas however, lack even the most basic medical facilities. They are often very strenuous treks. You should asses the risk and be as prepared as possible to deal with your health in case of sickness. (Your guide is trained in first-aid and will arrange an emergency evacuation if necessary.)
Nature or culture or both You will get a wonderful cultural experience on any trek, but certain treks offer more exposure to authentic culture than others. There is beautiful scenery almost everywhere you look, but some prefer the remote and tranquil places while others would like to enjoy the scenes while sipping a beer in a busy lodge.
